In 1965 there were five young musicians playing Kimbundu village music on percussion instruments, with an electric guitar. They all came from the same township in the south of Luanda: Prenda. Adding more and more guitars their music truly started to become musica urbana. Os Jovens Do Prenda became so successful that in 1971 they went professional and became one of the famous groups in colonial Angola. But in 1975, they had to split up due to the war sponsored by South Africa. Six years later Os Jovens Do Prenda re-united with two remaining original members. The group has now emerged with the present sound of Angola, although their creativity is not limited by the introduction of a new generation of popular instruments; their modern-traditional sound reflects the right time relation between old and new, the presence of the past for the future!
