"Klezmer has gone from an underused term to being over generalized... Musician's warning: inclusion of an augmented second interval may lead to your music being labelled klezmer. Music that functions as klezmer is klezmer." F. London

Before the career-igniting performance of this amazing band at the 1988 Heimatklänge Festival in Berlin, the Klezmatics played local weddings in New York. Their musical talent is constantly growing as they work to create wonderful music with diverse individuals and groups of different styles. The Klezmatics play soul-stirring roots music for the 21st Century, with arrangements and compositions that combine issues of Jewish identity and mysticism with outrageous histories and new interpretations of the original traditions of Klezmer brass bands. Since 1986 the Klezmatics have celebrated the vivacious nature of Yiddish music, creating wild, spiritual, reflective, and danceable music. The vitality and joy of their music has uplifted sold-out audiences around the world since their start fifteen years ago. They have reached millions of television viewers on programs such as Great Performances, The Late Night Show with David Letterman, CBS Nightwatch, Fox TV´s After Breakfast, the BBC´s Rhythms of the World, and MTV News. Members of the Klezmatics have joined Led Zeppelin, John Zorn, Bob Newirth (Velvet Underground), LL Cool J, Lester Bowie, David Byrne, Uri Caine, Giora Feidmann, and David Krakauer for different musical projects. The lyrics of the Klezmatics' songs often confront controversial issues such as slavery, refugees, racism, religion, prejudice, sexual independence, and marijuana use. Although the words are sometimes in Yiddish, non-Yiddish speakers should get the gist. Many of the group's albums have earned them other jobs as well as a number of awards. "Rhythm and Jews" reached the top ten on the Billboard Magazine World Music chart, the European World Music and the College Music Journal charts, and was awarded the 1992 Deutsche Schallplatten Kritikpreis (German Critics Award). The Klezmatics also appeared with Itzhak Perlman in his Emmy award-winning PBS Television special, "Great Performances: In the Fiddler´s House." A recording with Perlman was later released and has since topped world and classical music charts internationally, becoming one of the top selling folk albums of the past decade. Articles about the group have also appeared in "High Times" magazine for some of their wild songs addressing marijuana use. We can all look forward to upcoming projects from the Klezmatics that promise variety, charm, excitement, emotion and unique style.
