"Suddenly, I heard a warm, friendly voice beside me (it was Gino Sitson), asking "So, what did you think? Did you enjoy the show?" What can I say? Like it? I loved it! And I have to admit, hearing Sitson's incredible vocals belting out beneath the New York skyscrapers on Friday night, I almost found myself believing that yes, miracles do exist!" Cameroonian Gino Sitson is the only vocalist who is incorporating African polyphonic techniques into the vocal jazz tradition. Through his 4.5 octave wizardry, he stunningly creates an endless range of sounds. Sitson's daring musical project combines jazz, gospel, blues and traditional African rhythms and melodies in a most innovative way. He is the pioneer of a new generation of multi-culturally influenced African musicians who are integrating their own "in-between" living experiences (north/south, tradition/modernity, 20th/21st century) into their musical styles. Freely exploring the use of his voice and body, combining his vocal acrobatics with amazing body percussions and miscellaneous effects, Mr. Sitson has forged his own musical style, a unique vocal technique. Gino Sitson comes from a long line of musicians, known as Ntontas ("players of horns"). His mother was a vocalist and choir director, and early in life he was introduced to blues, jazz and traditional African music by listening to records. Before starting his professional career, he split his time between music academies and the Sorbonne, in Paris, where he studied languages and ethnomusicology. Little by little Mr. Sitson entered the professional musical world, first as a drummer, then as a singer. He has laid down tracks or shared the stage with Manu Dibango, Papa Wemba, Antoine Roney, Wally Badarou, Geri Allen, Ray Lema, Craig Harris, Jorge Ben, John William, Wallace Roney, Brice Wassy, James Hurt, Oliver N'Goma, Exile One, Nia Love, La Compagnie Créole, Steve Potts, and the "So Why?" project (with Youssou N'Dour, Papa Wemba, Wally Badarou, Jabu Khanyile & Bayete, and Lucky Dube), among others. After the release of his first album "Vocal Deliria", Sitson toured France and abroad with his Vocal-Afro-Jazz group. He appeared in well-known Parisian stages such as the New Morning, the Petit Journal Montparnasse, the Duc des Lombards, the Sunset, and the All Jazz Club. His concerts at the Hot Brass and the Divan du Monde in Paris were recorded for Radio France Internationale and filmed for the television program Africa Live, broadcasted by cable channels MCM and Canal France International. Mr. Sitson also performed at a number of major music venues in Italy (Palermo di Scena, Musica Dei Popoli...), Switzerland (Open PROMO) and Germany, sometimes opening for stars like the Brazilian singer João Bosco. In 2001, he received a standing ovation at the SXSW festival (Austin, USA). In France, his unusual vocal tone and his talent as a composer, interpreter and arranger made him very much in demand for albums, commercials (Danone yogurt, Dim stockings, Peugeot cars?), radio and television jingles. In 1998, he collaborated in the composition of a musical in which he sung and performed (Jeanne et le garçon formidable). In 2000, Mr. Sitson was nominated for the WMCE (World Music Chart Europe) and for the RFI Awards. In 2000, Mr. Sitson fell in love with New York and decided to settle there: "Because I like the energy of this city, which makes me feel free and bursting with inspiration." He was on a mission to further explore and experiment with the "world of voices", using minimal amplified western instrumentation. Although a resident for only a short time, he has been filling venues everywhere he has performed. Whether at the Smithsonian Museum or the Brooklyn Museum of Art, packed audiences have been raving about this extraordinarily gifted new arrival from Cameroon. Aside from a tour sponsored by the illustrious Carnegie Hall, and various musical performances, Gino has developed workshops for professional and non-professional singers, as well as for children. He is also regularly engaged for movie scores and commercials. He has appeared on Cuny TV (Channel 75), WB (Channel 12)... Sitson's second album "Song Zin'..." was released worldwide in April 2002 and has received great reviews from the press.
